Honduras: Drowning Without You

On November 3rd, hurricane ETA hit Honduras, leaving many areas of my country completely devastated. Natural disasters cannot be prevented, but they can be prepared for, and this is something our government completed failed to do. I wish I could tell you that our government did not act accordingly to the impending threat of this hurricane because they didn’t have time to prepare, but unfortunately, that is not the case.
The hurricane was scheduled to hit Honduras during the Semana Morazánica, a Honduran holiday that was meant to take place from November 4th to November 8th. Fully knowing that the storm would hit, our president told our people that we should still go out and enjoy our holiday, but to be careful. Not only did he forget that we’re currently in a pandemic and should be practicing social distancing, he completely disregarded the life threatening hurricane headed our way.
However, this article doesn’t center on what he didn’t do before or what he didn’t do after (because he’s basically done nothing), but rather on what our people are doing to help each other. It’s not secret that many people lost everything, they had to climb onto their roofs and stay out there for days until they were rescued. Many didn’t even have a roof to climb onto, they survived out of sheer will, holding onto something while the water rose, or perhaps they were helped out by a stranger who risked their lives to save them. Getting through the hurricane was extremely painful and difficult, and unfortunately, that was just the beginning.
The Aftermath
After a few days, hurricane Eta passed, and we were left to deal with the damage. Streets were flooded, homes were covered in mud, everything is ruined, people are homeless, some are missing, everyone is starving, it’s a disaster. But human beings tend to come together when disaster strikes and that is exactly what happened. Everyone I know is doing what they can to help. Volunteering, donating, spreading the word, everyone is doing something to help, even those who need help themselves.
How you can help
But no mater how much we help, it doesn’t feel like it’s enough, and that’s because its not. Unfortunately, our government doesn’t have our backs, so we must reach out to others who can help.
